If you’ve looked at the glowing icons on your Billi tap and wondered what they mean, each one has a purpose. These illuminated indicators are designed to support safe use of boiling water, help with system upkeep, and signal other reminders about your Billi system. Once you understand their meanings, these icons provide a simple way to stay informed about your Billi system’s status, thereby making everyday use smoother and more intuitive.
Why Dispenser Icons Matter
On Billi systems, the icons communicate four essential areas: safety, water type, efficiency, and maintenance. Examples include a red safety lock icon confirms boiling is securely locked off. Energy symbols show when the unit has shifted into an eco or standby mode to conserve power. Filter and CO? alerts prompt you to organise replacements to maintain high water quality and system reliability. All of these icons are part of Billi’s design philosophy which are systems that combine innovation, efficiency, and intuitive user experience.

Understanding Billi Dispenser Icons
- Boiling safety lock: The red lock shows that boiling water is locked. Touch the release as instructed in your model’s guide, and the dispenser returns to safe mode after a short period.
- Chilled indicator: Lights up when chilled water is ready. On adjustable models, you can fine-tune the temperature.
- Sparkling indicator: Confirms carbonation is available. Some models allow you to adjust sparkling levels up to 5 bar of pressure.
- Filter change reminder: Prompts a filter replacement at set intervals. Changing filters on time supports taste, odour, and flow.
- CO? replacement alert: Appears on sparkling models when the cylinder is empty or low. The Eco Sparkling guide provides changeover steps.
- Standby and time switch: Show when the unit is conserving energy, either by scheduled timers or inactivity detection.
- Display or control lock: Prevents unintended activation. Used in shared kitchens or workplaces.
Quick Fixes for Common Questions
- An icon keeps flashing after a filter change: Reset steps differ by model. Check your user guide and ensure a genuine Billi filter is fitted.
- The lock will not release: Confirm you are using the correct unlock action and check if the display lock is active.
- Sparkling feels flat, but the icon shows available: Likely a low or empty CO? cylinder. Replace or refill as required.
- Icons look different to those pictured: Icon style varies across OmniOne, Eco, Sahara, Quadra and Alpine models. Refer to your unit’s user guide for the exact set.
Download the User Guide of your Billi model for more information.
Boiling Safety Made Simple
The most reassuring icon is the safety lock. When the red lock glows, boiling is off-limits until deliberately released. This makes shared spaces safer, particularly around children. The lock complements other safeguards built into Billi systems: splash-free boiling delivery, cool-to-touch dispensers, ergonomic lever design, and safety isolation modes.
Chilled and Sparkling Indicators
These icons confirm chilled or sparkling water is available. If sparkling begins to taste flat, but the indicator is still lit, the CO? cylinder may be low. Check the cylinder or arrange a service visit.
Filter and CO? Alerts Made Clear
When the filter icon appears, replace the cartridge promptly. Even light users should change filters annually. Sparkling models also display a CO? icon when the cylinder needs replacing. You can manage these tasks yourself or opt for a BilliCare Service Plan, which provides scheduled filter and cylinder changes using genuine parts.
Energy-Saving Modes
Eco, standby and time-switch icons reflect our sustainability commitments. These features reduce energy consumption by learning usage patterns or powering down after inactivity. The result is less energy used without compromising convenience during peak times.
Practical Way to Read Your Tap
Now you know the icons are straightforward signals, each serving a purpose: safety when it matters, reminders that protect taste and flow, and eco features that cut energy use. These are part of Billi’s promise: Australian-made quality, intuitive design, and dependable support.
If an icon on your dispenser is signalling for attention, act now. Book a Service or Shop genuine Billi filters and CO?.

Learn the health benefits of soda water and how sparkling water is good for weight loss
Key Benefits Of Sparkling Water For Weight Loss
One of the benefits of sparkling water for weight loss is that it can help you to reduce your calorie intake. Sparkling water can make it easier for you to swap out calorie-heavy drinks like juice and soft drinks which can help you achieve your weight loss goals.
- Because people often feel more enticed to drink sparkling water, this can increase their water intake and help them to stay hydrated.
- Staying hydrated is beneficial overall for your health & wellbeing but in terms of weight loss, people often misread thirst for hunger and eating when your body doesn’t need calories can lead to weight gain.
- Staying hydrated can help you to feel satisfied and less inclined to head to the kitchen for a snack.
- When you’re properly hydrated you also tend to have more energy which can help you burn more calories throughout the day by being more active.
- There is some evidence that suggests sparkling water can help with constipation. In addition to being uncomfortable which can result in being less active, constipation can also add to the scales.
Another health benefit of soda water is that it has been shown to improve digestion which can break down foods more effectively and move them through your body quicker – which can also support weight loss.

We all know the importance of keeping your fluids up and staying hydrated, but can you drink too much water? And if so, how much water is too much? Below is information on how much water is too much in a day and the impacts of overhydration.
Billi has been at the forefront of the instant filtered boiling and chilled water systems industry for over 30 years. All our water filtration systems come with an assurance of quality, innovation & sustainability and are proudly Australian-designed & made to strict quality standards in our state-of-the-art facilities in Melbourne. Here is what you need to know about overhydration and how much water is too much in a day
Overhydration: Can You Drink Too Much Water?
Drinking enough water helps to regulate your temperature, can prevent constipation, flushes out waste products and generally keeps our bodies performing as they need to – however, you can drink too much water. Too much water can cause water toxicity which can create an electrolyte imbalance (or water poisoning).
When you drink more than your kidneys can excrete via your urine, the electrolytes (amount of sodium) in your body dilute which can lead to hyponatremia and inflammation. Hyponatremia can cause swelling of your brain cells, leading to your central nervous system malfunctioning. This can cause serious issues including death however this is rare and usually only happens when an underlying medical condition is causing your kidneys to retain fluid.
Symptoms Of Overhydration
- Colourless urine is a sign of overhydration (dark urine is a sign you’re not drinking enough water. Pale yellow urine is an indication your hydration is where it needs to be)
- Symptoms of hyponatremia caused by water toxicity can include nausea & vomiting, headaches, confusion or disorientation, drowsiness and muscle cramps
How Can You Prevent Overhydration?
One of the simplest ways to prevent overhydration is to listen to your body and taking the recommended daily water intake in mind. If your body is telling you you’re thirsty, trust that, but keep track of how much water you’re drinking. If you’re doing a high level of physical activity such as endurance training, we recommend talking to your health professionals to get advice about hydration tailored specifically to you.
How Much Water Is Too Much In A Day?
How much water you should drink does vary depending on your gender, the weather, how active you are and your health. Essentially, the amount of water you drink should equal the amount your kidneys release, however as a guide, the Institute of Medicine recommends that a healthy adult should drink approximately 9–13 cups of fluids per day.
Either way, staying hydrated is important for your health and when it comes to the water you’re putting into your body, you want to make sure it’s good quality. And whilst overhydration is something that some need to consider, for many, their focus is on ensuring they are drinking enough water.
Our water filtration systems utilise premium water filters that ensure you have the best quality drinking water. And with water combinations that can include instant boiling, still, chilled and sparkling water on tap, this makes it easy for you to keep your fluid levels up, just be mindful of your daily fluid intake of course.

Sparkling water has gained in popularity over the last few years, and many have added Sodastreams to their collection of kitchen appliances. But, if you’re not keen on manually making your sparkling water with a bulky machine that takes up precious storage space, there are some great Sodastream alternatives. Below is our recommendation on the best Sodastream alternative.
Here is what we think is the best Sodastream alternative
Best At Home Sodastream Alternative
Our water filtration systems are a great Sodastream alternative – giving you instant unlimited sparkling water on tap in your home. We have two models in our range that include a sparkling water option:
- Billi Home CS with Dual Levered Slimline Dispenser – Chilled and sparkling water on tap
- Billi Home BCS with XL Levered Dispenser – Boiling, chilled and sparkling water on tap
Our water filtration systems are an under bench system so the only thing visible is the dispenser. Our dispensers feature modern, stylish designs available in a range of popular finishes that look great in any kitchen. Being under a bench means no bench top clutter, or a bulky SodaStream machine taking up space in the cupboard that you have to lug out every time you want to make sparkling water. Our systems also have one of the smallest footprints on the planet so they don’t take up lots of cupboard space either.
One of the best things about our systems, making them a great Sodastream alternative is that the sparkling water is filtered through a water filtration system as opposed to filling up your SodaStream bottles with unfiltered tap water. Our filters remove chlorine, parasitic cysts (including cryptosporidium & giardia), and heavy metals whilst allowing minerals to flow through. This also makes your sparkling water taste better too. Our systems also allow you to adjust the sparkling level to your exact liking. And, you can also say goodbye to the SodaStream bottles taking up space in the fridge!

In the quest for clean, safe drinking water, the conversation inevitably turns towards the effectiveness of water filtration systems, and with the rise of environmental pollutants, the presence of heavy metals in our water supply is a growing concern for many.
Billi, a global leader in water filtration technology for over 30 years, offers innovative solutions to address these concerns. This guide explores the effectiveness of carbon water filters and activated carbon filters for water in removing heavy metals and the advantages of Billi’s filtration systems over reverse osmosis.
Understanding Heavy Metals in Water
Heavy metals, including lead, mercury, and arsenic, can find their way into water sources due to industrial processes, agricultural runoff, and ageing infrastructure. Consuming water contaminated with heavy metals can lead to serious health issues, making effective water filtration a priority for many households and businesses alike.
What Filters Remove Heavy Metals?
Carbon filters are renowned for their ability to improve water taste and odour by reducing chlorine and organic chemicals. However, their ability to remove heavy metals is where the distinction between activated carbon filters and standard carbon filters becomes important:
- Activated Carbon Filters: Utilising a minimal amount of bonding agent, these filters feature a graded density profile, allowing for superior contaminant reduction performance. Billi’s 0.2 Micron Fibron XC® Filter is designed to significantly reduce heavy metals in water, including lead, by a factor of 98.93%, ensuring safer drinking water.
- Standard Carbon Filters: Often made up of granules held together by resin, these filters have a reduced surface area for filtration, limiting their effectiveness in removing heavy metals.

Advantages Over Reverse Osmosis
While reverse osmosis does remove heavy metals amongst a wide range of contaminants, it comes with its drawbacks:
- Waste Water: Reverse osmosis systems typically waste a significant amount of water and congruently have a slower filtration rate than Billi’s instant filters.
- Cost and Maintenance: These systems can be more expensive to install and maintain compared to carbon filters.
- Mineral Removal: Reverse osmosis also removes beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium from water, which can affect its taste and health benefits.
In contrast, Billi’s carbon water filters are designed to retain essential minerals while effectively reducing contaminants, offering a cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly solution.
Choose Billi to Sip With Confidence

When looking for water filtration systems people often ask us, ‘do water filters remove all chemicals?’. The short answer is no, water filters don’t remove all chemicals but can significantly reduce the amount of chlorine and organic chemicals in your water. As an award-winning designer and manufacturer of world-class water filtration products, Billi have the premium filters to reduce the amount of chemicals in your water.
What Do Water Filters Filter Out?
When considering what do water filters remove, the type of filter will inform the answer. Conventional carbon filters are made of granules and often held together with a resin – which can decrease the surface area and therefore the quality of filtration. By contrast premium filters utilise activated carbon fibre with minimal bonding. They apply technologies like BWT’s Fibron X® media which has a superior contaminant reduction performance and capacity, and is therefore likely to remove more.
What Does a Water Filter Remove from Tap Water?
Billi’s premium water filters can reduce chemicals (reducing chlorine and organic chemicals), all while allowing minerals to flow through the appliance without scale or build-up.
In addition, our 0.2 micron filters can reduce:
- parasitic cysts giardia
- cryptosporidium and;
- heavy metals.
How Do Water Filters Remove Chemicals?
Billi’s premium range of filters provides superior water quality, consistent filter life and peace of mind through a number of processes.
Firstly, we provide premium filters that utilise activated carbon fibre with graded density profiles. These differ from conventional carbon filters because they have minimal bonding agents and superior contaminant reduction performance and capacity. By contrast while a conventional water filter does remove chemicals it’s held together with a resin, which decreases the surface area and in turn the quality and amount of filtration.
Secondly, because instant filtered drinking water systems require regular maintenance and filter replacements to ensure optimal water quality and an ongoing level of performance, we offer three different customer care plans – from DIY through to fully serviced.

Other Considerations for Water Filtration Systems
One should not only ask, ‘do water filters remove all chemicals?’ but also, ‘how do filtration systems help to improve our environment?’. Billi’s Eco and Quadra systems also hold eco-credentials in the form of GreenTag certification. As such these systems can not only remove chemicals through their filtration, but they also remove the need for plastic bottles, are highly energy efficient, and can reduce your carbon footprint.

If you’re asking. ‘Is it safe to drink filtered tap water?’ then you’ve come to the right place. We make award winning, Australian designed and manufactured instant filtered drinking water systems that are tested to the strictest national and internal standards. Is it safe to drink filtered tap water? Learn more below.
Do I Need to Filter My Tap Water?
Wondering if Australia’s tap water is drinkable straight from the tap? For many, the answer is yes, but there are exceptions. Households sourcing water from rainwater tanks or boreholes, or if your local water supply has been compromised then filtering water can be beneficial if not necessary.
For many people filtering tap water makes substantial improvements to the taste – particularly the chlorine taste that is a by-product of our mains water disinfection processes. Plus, there are other benefits to installing a Billi filtration system – such as instant boiling, chilled and sparkling water options.
As well as the above, factors such as aging infrastructure, environmental contaminants, and outdated household plumbing can alter water quality. Together, these risks become more pronounced, advocating for a robust filtration system.
Is Drinking Filtered Water Bad for You?
No, in fact in many areas filtering water may even be helpful – that is, filtered water is safe to drink. For example, if you use rain or bore water, or if your mains water supply has been contaminated, a water filtration system can not only remove particles, chemicals and bacteria but also improve taste. However, it’s important to use a multi-stage filtration system rather than a conventional carbon filter. Find out why.

Is Filtered Water Good for You?
In the situations described above filtered water can be helpful – that is, drinking filtered water is good for you. However, it’s also important to choose a system that has the appropriate certifications. For example, Billi’s filter range is tested in accordance to the strictest health and safety standards. Our filters carry the Australian Standards WaterMark for product safety and consumer confidence. These certifications ensure that with a Billi the highest level of drinking water is available. Find a Billi that suits you.
Billi’s Premium Filtration Technology
Our filtration range is designed for adaptability, serving both residential and commercial settings. Our 0.2-Micron filters are recommended for peace of mind, removing impurities like heavy metals, chlorine, and harmful parasitic cysts. Conversely, our 5-micron filter excels in improving water by removing particles and limescale, which enhances both taste and odour.
Filter Efficacy and Maintenance
We take pride in the performance of our filters, aiming to deliver pristine drinking water consistently. To maintain this high standard, we recommend an annual filter replacement. Over time, filters capture organic materials that could affect water quality. By setting a minimum filter lifespan, we proactively manage and mitigate any decline in performance.
Self-replacing your filter is simple with our guides. Alternatively, our BilliCare team can manage and schedule filter changes, ensuring your system operates flawlessly. You can easily book a service online or sign up for one of our service plans for the most convenient level of service.
Still Have Questions?
Using a multi-stage filtration system can remove microbiological elements such as parasitic cysts giardia and cryptosporidium. It can also filter out particles and reduce chemical elements such as chlorine and heavy metals. Learn more about how filtration systems work. You can access more information on the question, ‘Does tap water need to be filtered?’ on our Why Billi page.

Soda or sparkling water consumption has increased significantly over the last few years, especially now that you can access it on tap with one of our water filtration systems. Many find it ideal for keeping their hydration up as they enjoy drinking sparkling water over still water – but, with higher consumption some wonder if soda water is acidic and if it is considered a ‘not so healthy’ alternative to regular water. Below we provide info on the pH of soda water, what alkaline water is and dispel some of the myths about soda & alkaline water.
If you’re wondering if soda water is acidic, below is what the pH of soda water is along with what alkaline water is and how it differs from regular water:
Is Soda Water Acidic?
pH is the measurement used to determine how acidic or basic water is. Any substance below 7 on the pH scale is acidic and any above 7 is alkaline. A substance with a pH of 7 is considered neutral. So based on this, is soda water acidic?
Soda or sparkling water has carbon dioxide added to it to create bubbles. The carbon dioxide and water react and produce carbonic acid which means the pH level of soda water is below 7. The pH of soda water can vary slightly but on average the pH of soda water sits somewhere between 3 and 4.
Compared to other beverages though such as soft drinks and juices, soda water is often much less acidic. And, when you take into account that soda water doesn’t include other potentially harmful ingredients such as sugar, salt or artificial ingredients, it’s often a much healthier alternative.
There also is a common misconception that soda water’s acidity can have adverse effects on your body and teeth. Whilst limited research has been conducted on the impacts of soda water, it is considered that the lower levels of acidity in soda water do not pose a serious risk to your body or teeth. And, when you weigh up the benefits of increasing your water intake and drinking soda water instead of additive-laden alternatives, soda water can be considered a much healthier choice.
What Is Alkaline Water?
Alkaline water is simply water that has a higher pH than 7. ‘Regular’ water such as tap water usually has a pH between 6.5 and 8.5. Water that is labelled with the term ‘alkaline water’ for marketing purposes tends to have a higher alkalinity than tap water.
There is a lot of talk about the health benefits of alkaline water with some claiming that it can provide greater hydration, can neutralise acids in your body and can even prevent cancer. However whilst some limited studies suggest alkaline water may be beneficial no research provides substantial evidence to prove or disprove the benefits of alkaline water.
Water Filtration Systems That Include Carbonated Water
The benefit of our water filtration systems that give you sparkling water is that you have high-quality filtered sparkling water on tap, that tastes great. You don’t have bottles of sparkling water taking up storage space and going flat before you finish them and you no longer need a bulky manual sparkling machine to add to your list of kitchen appliances.
