Tap water introduces a range of variables that can have a negative impact on the health and productivity of your building’s users. Isn’t it time for you to consider a filtration system?
If you ask people in your facility whether they’re happy drinking water directly from the tap, the majority will say yes. They might not know what chemicals and contaminants are present in the water or how local factors such as infrastructure or pollutant runoff can affect the overall quality, but they feel confident that whatever ends up in their glass is safe to drink.
That’s a problem. While the quality of drinking water in Australia is high by world standards, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be more vigilant when it comes to staying hydrated in the workplace. Not all chemicals found in drinking water are regulated by the states and standards and guidelines are constantly being updated to reflect our growing understanding of what can be considered safe levels.
Even then, there is little regulators can do to deal with such issues as potential lead poisoning as a result of old infrastructure and fixtures. While the World Health Organisation states that no level of lead exposure is safe, Australian guidelines allow brass fittings to contain lead content up to 4.5 percent. That’s 18 times the level allowed in developed countries such as Canada and the US.
There’s also the issue of smell and odour caused by additives such as chlorine. While these elements might not change the quality of water by themselves, they still pose a problem if they are keeping people from staying hydrated. Research has shown that fluid loss levels as low as 1.36 percent can impair mood, concentration and memory while increasing chances of headaches and fatigue.
Facility managers play a crucial role in ensuring the users of their buildings have access to the purest, highest quality drinking water available. The best way to achieve this is through the use of filtration systems. Easy to install and maintain, these systems remove a range of unwanted elements to deliver water that everyone will be excited to drink.
Not all filters are created equal, however. The conventional carbon filters found in traditional models are made up of granules and often held together with a resin. As a result, the surface area of the filter is limited, as is the quality of the filtration.
Billi’s premium filter range is different. Utilising Fibron X technology crafted by our partners at Best Water Technology (BWT), our multi-stage filtration system uses carbon fibre with minimal bonding agent in a graded density profile. This means the media has a superior contaminant reduction performance and capacity.
Fibron X technology features turbidity reduction to keep drinking water clear, lowers chemical taste and odour and our Fibron XC model even has the ability to remove parasitic cysts such as cryptosporidium and lead.
Such impressive performance is sure to keep building users happy and hydrated all day, every day.

Billi Australia, as a team, took part in the 2019 WaterAid Water Challenge. We made the pledge to drink only water for the full month of March.
Most Australian’s are lucky enough to have access to clean water whenever it is wanted or needed. Yet we often take it for guaranteed or turn a blind eye and quench our thirst with other beverages such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, cordial, juice or alcohol. Some of which can counteract the benefits of water and dehydrate us even further.
H2O is crucial for one’s health and wellbeing. Up to 60% of the human body is made up of water. Those fluids in your body aid in essential processors such as transporting nutrients, regulating body temperature, maintaining the body’s fluid balance, digesting food and creating of saliva. Yet 80% of Australian adults suffer from chronic dehydration.
We took part in the water challenge, not only to help raise funds to provide clean water to people less fortunate than us, but also to raise awareness of just how important water is to all of us.
We are proud to announce we came very close to our $1000 goal by raising $825, which will provide clean water to at least 2 families.
Thank you all for your support and donations.
March 11 is World Plumbing Day.
It is a date that has been fixed on the calendars of the World Plumbing community since its establishment by the WPC in 2010 and is now a fixture on the calendars of political and social institutions around the globe.
The international plumbing community, as represented by the Council, has a vital role in promoting the link between good quality plumbing, health, environmental sustainability and, increasingly, economic prosperity.
March 11 is marked by celebrations, competitions, seminars, and activities all around the world. People from within and outside the plumbing fraternity come together to learn, share knowledge, build connections and find opportunities to collaborate to improve the quality of, and access to, fresh water and safe sanitation.
There are now hundreds of annual World Plumbing Day events, promoting the link between good plumbing sanitation and human and environmental health.
At Billi, we’re proud to be part of a community that has made such significant difference to the world as we know it. Since the invention of the first shower in 710BC, the plumbing and water industries have come a very long way. And now fast forward to 2019, we’re proud to showcase innovative under-bench boiling, chilled and sparkling filtered water systems.
1 in 9 people worldwide don’t have access to a clean water source close to home. But as we all know, water is essential for life and good health. That’s why we are challenging ourselves this March to make water our only beverage. We’ll be improving our health, while raising money to help more people enjoy the benefits of clean water.
WaterAid will reach everyone, everywhere with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene within a generation. This vision inspires us, and we hope it inspires you too.
Please donate to our fundraising page to contribute to WaterAid’s amazing work. For just $70, WaterAid could provide clean water to a child, while $350 could help provide clean water to a family.

It is estimated 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste has been generated with 79% accumulated in landfill or our natural environment. One of the biggest culprits? Single use plastic bottles.
One million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute. Figures obtained by The Guardian show the annual sale of plastic bottles will soar to one trillion by the end of this decade — a 20 per cent increase. Some experts are calling this crisis as bad as global warming.
Most of those bottles end up in landfill, where they take a significant time to break down, or in the ocean where they kill marine life. According to Blue Planet, it’s estimated in some parts of the ocean that there are over “half a million pieces of plastic for every square kilometre”. A report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation found the equivalent of a garbage truck worth of plastic bottles was being dumped into the ocean every minute.
To produce 1 litre of bottled water it typically requires 3 litres of water, so the impact of our on-the-go drinking obsession goes beyond the waste in landfill and the ocean.
So, what can you do?
For the general public, the thought of tackling the mounting plastic waste problem can be daunting. A really simple way of working to reduce the amount of personal plastic waste you produce is to carry a reusable glass bottle with you every day and refill using a Billi filtered water system. Some other simple ways to reduce your personal waste:
- Say no to disposable straws. Glass straws are relatively inexpensive and are a much better alternative. Just remember when you order a drink to ask for it without a plastic straw.
- Purchase a reusable coffee cup or just take your favourite mug. Some cafes even offer a discount when you bring your own mug.
- Eat In. It generally only takes minutes between filling up a single use takeaway container and throwing it away. If you can’t eat in, there a plenty of good options for glass or stainless steel reusable containers on the market.
- And finally recycle! ABC’s War on Waste program spoke to Planet Ark’s Brad Grey about this and he estimates that at least 20% of what is in our garbage bins should be recycled. See more on this here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-24/what-plastics-can-i-recycle-war-on-waste/8548658
The time for thinking about your plastic waste is now. Hugo Tagholm, chief executive of Surfers Against Sewage in the UK, while speaking to the Evening Standard, welcomed steps to cut plastic waste. “The time for action is now and we urge the Government not to kick the proverbial plastic bottle down the street but implement new policies and legislation that the country is crying out for to finally go plastic free.” He added: “We must reinvent our relationship with single-use plastic to eliminate, replace and recycle plastics faster and more effectively.”
