Safety, Quality, and Sustainability: Billi Group’s ISO Journey

At Billi, we believe in our rallying mantra of “The Power of One”—it is an apt call to unite our expanding influence as a global company. Following our recent relocation to our new headquarters and factory office in Reservoir VIC, we are proud to announce that our commitment to excellence at this fit-for-future facility has been officially re-certified.
At the end of 2025, Billi Australia successfully completed a comprehensive audit with BSI Global. This audit was a critical step in updating our certifications to reflect our new operations, ensuring that our management systems remain world-class as we expand our manufacturing and distribution capacity.
A Message from Leadership
In recognition of our ongoing dedication to these standards, David Gardiner, Billi WHS Manager ANZ, shared his thoughts on the importance of this milestone:
“For this World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Billi reaffirms our commitment to ISO 9001, 45001 & 14001 – Work Health and Safety standards. By embedding safety into every process, we ensure the wellbeing of our people, partners, and customers every day.”
What Does ISO Mean?
While many recognise the name, few know its origin. ISO is the short name for the International Organisation for Standardisation. It is not an acronym, but a name inspired by the Greek word isos, meaning “equal”. This reflects a global mission to create consistency and equality in standards worldwide, regardless of language or location.
(*reference: https://www.iso.org/about)
The Gold Standard: Billi’s Certified Systems
The recent audit was rigorous, covering three vital pillars of our business operations:
- ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System): Ensuring our products and services consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements.
- ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System): Demonstrating our dedication to reducing our environmental footprint, improving resource efficiency, and driving sustainable practices.
- ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health & Safety): Confirming that we prioritise the health, safety, and wellbeing of our team above all else.

A Perfect Result
“We are thrilled to share that the audit was completed with zero findings. Our certifications have been officially updated to our new address, confirming that our new facility operates at the highest possible global standards.
By meeting the ISO 45001 standard, we have proven our commitment to a safe workplace for everyone. Likewise, our ISO 14001 certification underscores our ‘duty of care’ as we navigate our global impact and sustainability goals.”
Driven by the “Power of One”
This achievement is a direct result of the dedication and collaboration of the entire Billi team. As we progress through 2026, these certifications provide the solid foundation needed to present a single, strong, and safe front to our partners and customers worldwide.
Together, we are embedding best practices into every tap we manufacture and every system we design, ensuring that sustainability and safety remain at the forefront of the Billi legacy.

World Environment Day on 5 June 2026 invites us to reflect on our sustainability, but reflection alone does not reduce waste or conserve energy. Change is shaped by infrastructure and the systems installed in our homes and workplaces influence environmental impact every day.
For more than 30 years, Billi has been designing and manufacturing instant filtered boiling, chilled and sparkling water systems in Melbourne. Sustainability is embedded in our engineering, certification and long-term service support. This World Environment Day, move the conversation from awareness to infrastructure, and to the practical decisions that define daily water use.
Why everyday water habits matter more than we realise
Water is one of the most frequently accessed resources in any building. In residential kitchens it supports cooking, drinks and hospitality. In workplaces it supports productivity and collaboration. Because water consumption is habitual and high frequency, the delivery system becomes significant.
When water is supplied through single-use packaging and ongoing transport logistics, environmental impact accumulates over time. An integrated underbench system, by contrast, provides boiling, chilled, sparkling and still filtered water on demand from a single compact footprint. The difference is it changes how water is sourced, stored and consumed across years of use.
Therefore, a single decision about infrastructure shapes thousands of interactions with water across a home or organisation. That is where long-term environmental impact takes form.
Infrastructure over intention
World Environment Day can inspire commitment. But commitment without structural change rarely alters outcomes. The most effective sustainability decisions operate automatically. An appliance that conserves energy without requiring constant adjustment. A system that replaces separate boiling kettles and bottled deliveries. And a design that integrates efficiency into the building itself.
Billi systems are built around this principle. Water-cooled models do not require cupboard ventilation cut outs or cooling fans, supporting streamlined installation and quieter operation. Underbench footprints are among the smallest on the market, preserving valuable cabinetry space in both residential and commercial settings.
When sustainable behaviour becomes the default outcome of infrastructure, environmental responsibility no longer relies on daily vigilance. It becomes part of how the building functions.
Australian designed and manufactured for long-term performance
Our boiling and chilled units are designed and manufactured in Melbourne to strict quality standards. For over three decades, we have focused on high-performance underbench systems that serve homes, offices, healthcare facilities and educational environments.
Local design and manufacturing support quality control, responsive aftersales service and long-term parts availability. In sustainability terms, this reflects lifecycle thinking. A system designed to perform reliably for years carries a different environmental profile from one intended for short replacement cycles.
If you are reviewing options for a renovation or project specification, you can view our range to explore configurations suited to residential and commercial applications.

Energy efficiency is built into the system
Environmental claims must be supported by engineering. Our approach to efficiency is based on documented technology rather than general assertions.
Heat exchange technology reclaims waste heat energy generated during the chilling process and uses it to preheat boiling water. By recovering and repurposing this heat, the system improves efficiency while supporting energy savings.
Many units also feature a standby mode that powers down after periods of non-use. Selected systems incorporate Eco-Intelligence technology, a self-learning timer that monitors usage patterns and adjusts operation to minimise unnecessary energy consumption. It recognises changes in routine, including evenings and weekends, and adapts accordingly.
Water-cooled systems further enhance performance. By using water as a more effective conductor of heat than air, operating temperatures remain consistent without requiring ventilation grilles or clearance tolerances. The outcome is quieter operation and simplified joinery design.
These mechanisms are practical, measurable features embedded within the appliance. Sustainability, in this context, is a technical specification.
Certified environmental responsibility
Independent certification strengthens credibility. The Billi Quadra has been repeatedly certified by Global GreenTag at Gold Level under the LCARate Program and holds an Environmental Product Declaration under EPD EN 15804. These certifications are recognised by rating tools including Green Star, LEED, BREEAM, IS Rating and WELL features.
We also maintain a Cornerstone Membership with the International WELL Building Institute and participates in the Works with WELL program. For architects, developers and facilities managers, this alignment supports broader sustainability frameworks within commercial projects.
Certification does not replace responsibility. It reinforces it through independent verification and lifecycle analysis. Learn more about our sustainability commitments.
Designed to last and supported to perform
Sustainability extends beyond installation. Longevity and responsible maintenance are equally important.
With appropriate servicing and filter changes, there is no reason why a Billi unit will not last for many years. Filter replacement must be performed at intervals of not more than 12 months to maintain performance and hygiene.
BilliCare Service Plans provide structured support. The Gold Plan offers comprehensive maintenance including filter replacements, carried out by an accredited Billi technician. The Silver Plan focuses on scheduled filter replacement at a fixed rate. For sparkling systems, the Refillable CO2 Plan provides an environmentally responsible alternative to disposable cylinders, with periodic refill service provided to site.
If your Billi system is due for maintenance, book a service to maintain efficiency and reliability.
Practical ways to act on World Environment Day
World Environment Day calls for considered decisions. If you already have a Billi system, review your filter schedule and servicing plan to ensure it is operating as intended. Consistent maintenance protects both performance and longevity.
If you are planning a renovation or workplace upgrade, assess how water is delivered and consumed within the space. An integrated underbench system can replace multiple standalone appliances while embedding energy efficiency into everyday use.
For commercial teams, review bottled water reliance and consider infrastructure that aligns with recognised sustainability standards and long-term operational performance.
Commit to environmental progress
When water infrastructure is engineered for efficiency, independently certified for environmental performance and supported through long-term servicing, sustainability becomes embedded rather than aspirational. The focus shifts from one day of awareness to years of consistent impact.
Explore how considered water infrastructure can support responsible living not just for a single day, but for every day that follows. View our range or visit your local Billi stockist to take the next step towards a more thoughtful approach to water in your home or workplace.

International Plastic Free Day is on 25 May 2026. It is an initiative to look closely at the habits around our plastic usage, in areas such as our kitchens, our workplaces, and our purchasing decisions.
Single-use plastic water bottles were made for convenience. A few bottles for the fridge, a slab for the car, or a quick order for the office because it is easier than organising refills. However, that repetition is where the real impact lies.
Plastic Free Day makes us reconsider our routine. It asks us a simple question: what do we buy again and again that could be replaced with something sustainable and efficient?
For more than 30 years, Billi has been designing and manufacturing instant filtered boiling and chilled water systems in Melbourne. Sustainability, for us, is built into engineering decisions, certification standards and long-term servicing efficiency.
If you are looking for a practical area to change single-use plastic habits, bottled water is often a good starting point.
Why bottled water becomes a repeat purchase cycle
Bottled water is portable, familiar, and is available everywhere. That is often why it becomes habitual. Once it is part of the weekly shop or the monthly office order, it creates a cycle of purchase, transport, storage, chilling, and disposal. Then repeat.
For homes, that means fridge space is occupied by single-use plastic that will soon be discarded. For workplaces, it can mean ongoing deliveries, storage logistics and waste handling. It is not just about the bottle itself, it is about the recurring system that supports it.
If Plastic Free Day highlights anything, it is this pattern of repetition.
Practical steps that reduce waste immediately
Before changing infrastructure, it makes sense to adjust behaviour. Small shifts often create momentum.
At home
- Keep a reusable bottle where you naturally reach for water.
- Make refilling the easiest option in the kitchen, not the afterthought.
- Replace “just in case” bottle purchases with a simple refill routine before school, sport or travel.
At work
- Set up meeting rooms with glasses and a refill point rather than individual bottles.
- Review standard catering and site-visit practices.
- Encourage refill culture by ensuring filtered water is readily accessible.
These steps matter, but they rely on consistency. When time is tight, convenience tends to win. That is where infrastructure becomes important.

When habit change needs structural support
Most people do not resist sustainable choices because they disagree with them. They resist when those choices create friction.
If refilling is awkward, slow or inconvenient, bottled water fills the gap. If chilled or sparkling water is not available on tap, it is ordered.
Long-term change happens when the sustainable option becomes the default. When water at the right temperature, filtered and ready, is always there.
A permanent alternative to bottled water
Underbench filtered water systems address the root of the cycle. Instead of replacing bottles week by week, they remove the need for them in the first place.
Billi systems deliver filtered boiling, chilled, sparkling or still water directly from the tap, depending on the model selected. Because the unit sits under the bench, valuable counter space remains uncluttered. Many water-cooled models do not require cupboard ventilation cut-outs or grilles, simplifying installation and preserving joinery.
Water-cooled technology also operates quietly and incorporates heat exchange and energy reclaim technologies, helping the system perform efficiently during normal operation.
For homeowners, this means a kitchen that feels streamlined and purposeful. For commercial settings, it means reducing reliance on bottled deliveries while providing a high-quality hydration solution for staff and guests.
To explore suitable options, view our range and consider models such as OmniOne for multifunction commercial applications.
Sustainability backed by certification
Sustainability claims carry more weight when they are verified. The Billi Quadra has been repeatedly certified by Global GreenTag since 2012 at the Gold Level of the LCARate program and holds an Environmental Product Declaration under EPD EN 15804. We also hold a Cornerstone Membership with the International WELL Building Institute and participates in IWBI’s Works with WELL program.
For commercial decision-makers, these credentials support specification, ESG alignment and reporting confidence. For homeowners, they provide reassurance that sustainability is embedded in product development.

Built to last and supported for the long term
Reducing waste is not only about avoiding plastic. It is also about choosing products designed for longevity.
With appropriate maintenance and filter replacement, there is no reason a Billi unit cannot operate for many years. Like all instant filtered drinking water systems, filters must be replaced at intervals of no more than 12 months to maintain performance and hygiene. Commercial sites may require more frequent changes depending on usage.
Another consideration when relying heavily on bottled water is the plastic. Some plastics can release small amounts of chemicals into water over time, particularly when bottles are exposed to heat, sunlight, or long storage periods. The chemicals in this context include Bisphenol A (BPA), historically used in certain plastics and linked to potential hormonal effects, and phthalates, which may be used to increase plastic flexibility. Modern food-grade bottles are regulated and typically contain very low levels of these substances, and many are labelled BPA-free. However, research continues to examine how storage conditions may influence chemical migration from packaging into liquids (Food Standards Australia New Zealand).
Rather than viewing maintenance as an inconvenience, it can be seen as structured care. BilliCare Service Plans offer predictable support, including the comprehensive Gold Plan with maintenance and filter replacements, while the Silver Plan focused on filter servicing, and the Refillable CO2 Plan for sparkling systems. Accredited technicians and genuine parts ensure reliability across residential and commercial installations.

Addressing common questions
Is bottled water more convenient?
It can feel that way. Yet it requires ongoing purchasing, storage and disposal. A filtered water system shifts that convenience to on-demand access without recurring packaging.
Is an appliance better for the environment?
No appliance has zero impact. The comparison is between repeated manufacturing and disposal of plastic bottles and a durable system designed for years of operation, supported by documented sustainability credentials.
Will maintenance become complicated?
Routine filter replacement is straightforward, particularly with a service plan in place. Scheduled care reduces disruption and supports long-term performance.
Will it fit in my space?
Our systems are designed with space efficiency in mind. If you are unsure which configuration suits your kitchen or workplace, visit your local Billi stockist for guidance.
Make Plastic Free Day the beginning of a lasting change
Plastic Free Day is a reminder that recurring purchases can be replaced with recurring performance. When filtered boiling, chilled or sparkling water is built into your space, the default shifts quietly. The need to buy bottles reduces because the systems around you change.
If you are considering a more durable approach to hydration, explore our range or visit your local Billi stockist to explore what will work for your home or workplace.
The most meaningful changes are not dramatic. They are the ones that continue to operate, day after day, long after the awareness day has passed.

If you’re anywhere with hard, mineral-rich water, you’ve probably noticed murky tap water, residue on appliances, and a constant battle with scale. These are due to sediment-heavy water, and they can quietly take a toll on your systems, equipment, and overall water quality.
Billi have spent over 30 years innovating premium water filtration systems, designed and manufactured in Australia. The HSD filter is one of those innovations, as a solution for sediment-heavy water in Australia.
Learn why the HSD filter is uniquely effective for sediment reduction, how it integrates with our leading filtered boiling and chilled water systems, and why it’s the smart choice for residential and commercial settings alike.
Why sediment in your water is more than just an inconvenience
From scale-covered kettles to stained glassware, signs of sediment-heavy water are easy to spot. But beneath the surface, these particulates are doing more than making your water cloudy, they’re gradually damaging appliances, increasing maintenance needs, and degrading the performance of water systems.
Western Australia is particularly impacted due to natural mineral content and ageing infrastructure, but regional areas across the country experience similar issues. In high-use environments like cafés, offices, clinics, or commercial kitchens, the cost of poor water quality can add up.
Whether you’re a homeowner wanting better-tasting tea or a facilities’ manager overseeing multi-system installations, the effects of sediment are widely experienced.
Read our FAQs for more information on water quality concerns.
Why the right filter matters more than microns alone
It’s a common misconception that the finer the filter, the better the result. But in sediment-prone regions, micron filters can clog prematurely. That means frequent filter changes, lower system efficiency, and overall frustration.
The HSD filter operates in a range of 10–15 microns. Unlike finer filters that struggle with sediment-heavy water, the HSD is built to reduce larger particulates while still targeting chlorine, taste & odour.
You get robust performance without the maintenance frequency. The HSD filter offers high chlorine reduction and a 30,000-litre capacity, making it ideal for commercial and residential users who need reliable, cost-effective filtration that actually suits their environment.
What the HSD filter delivers
Purpose-built for Australian conditions, the HSD filter delivers more than just sediment management. It plays a key role in protecting your investment in a Billi system.
Manufactured in Melbourne using advanced Fibron X® carbon fibre technology developed with BWT, the filter integrates with leading Billi filtered boiling and chilled water systems, including the Quadra, Sahara, and Eco models. That means better-tasting, cleaner water on demand, without needing to modify your cabinetry, upgrade infrastructure, or constantly service your unit.

Engineered for Australian conditions and beyond
Western Australia has some of the hardest, most mineral-dense water in the country. But many parts of Australia face similar issues, which is why all Billi systems and filters are Australian-made, not retrofitted imports, but products created specifically for our environment.
By choosing the HSD filter, you’re investing in performance backed by decades of local testing, supported by a nationwide network, and built in line with Billi’s environmental and quality commitments. Read more about our sustainability values.
Effortless maintenance with long-term value
One of the standout advantages of the HSD filter is how little it asks of you. It’s designed to be replaced annually under typical conditions, and thanks to Billi’s underbench design, there’s no need for ventilation cut-outs or awkward cabinetry alterations.
For added peace of mind, Billi offers BilliCare Gold and Silver service plans, ensuring your filters are replaced on schedule by accredited technicians, with priority support included. It’s a low-effort, high-reward option that supports both sustainability and system longevity.

The Institute of Medicine recommends that a healthy adult should drink approximately 9–13 cups of fluids per day. Drinking enough water is essential for ensuring our bodies perform as they need to – every cell in the human body relies on water to function properly. But, many of us struggle to drink our daily recommended water intake. Having handy tips on how to drink more water can help to increase the amount of water you drink and also make it more pleasurable too. Below are our top three ways to drink more water to keep you hydrated so your body and mind can perform optimally.
Billi has been at the forefront of the instant filtered boiling and chilled water systems industry for over 30 years. All our water filtration systems come with an assurance of quality, innovation & sustainability and are proudly Australian-designed & made to strict quality standards in our state-of-the-art facilities in Melbourne. Looking for tips to drink more water? Here are our recommendations
Our Top Three Tips To Drink More Water
Whilst there are general guidelines in terms of recommendations on how much water you need to drink, this will vary from person to person as there are multiple factors that need to be taken into consideration such as the weather, how physically active you are and your health.
One of the best ways to determine your hydration levels is to check your urine (and also note how frequently you’re urinating). Your urine should be a pale yellow colour. If your urine is colourless you could be overhydrated, if it’s dark, you need to drink more. However, many people struggle to meet their daily recommended intake and are simply not drinking enough. This can come down to ease of access to water, not enjoying the taste, lack of time and other reasons.
What are some ways to drink more water?
- Start the day with a big drink of water. This not only helps to replace fluid lost during sleep but sets you up for healthy habits and a day of staying hydrated. Start as you mean to go on!
- Create daily water rituals. Find ways to drink more water throughout the day by setting yourself little goals. For example, every time you complete a task, drink some water. Pausing to take a break? have a glass of water in your hand. Every time you go into the kitchen, fill up your glass so you always have water on hand.
- Make drinking water more enticing and easily accessible. If you don’t enjoy the taste of water, this can make it much harder to get your daily intake. Installing one of our water filtration systems is a great way to drink more water. The premium filters we use in our water filtration systems not only ensure you are drinking the highest quality water but they improve the taste and odour too. And with options such as chilled, still or sparkling water easily accessible on tap, this makes it even more enticing to drink up!
Our range of water filtration systems are under bench systems so they’re tucked away out of sight. They have one of the smallest footprints in the market so don’t take up lots of valuable cupboard space – the only thing visible is a stylish, modern dispenser, ergonomically designed for ease of use.

Considering what the healthiest water filtration system is, requires an understanding of not only how filters work and what contaminants they can remove, but also the impact your chosen system makes on the environment. As suppliers of instant water filtration systems for over 25 years, Billi are the water filtration experts in Australia. Keep reading to learn more about our premium filters.
Which Water Filter Removes the Most Contaminants?
Generally, the smaller the micron number the more contaminants a filter can remove. For example:
- A 5 micron filter can remove particles visible to the naked eye.
- A 1 micron filter will remove particles which you can’t see
However, neither of these will reduce heavy metals, or parasitic cysts, giardia and cryptosporidium. For that you need a 0.2 micron filter.
What is the Healthiest Water Filtration System from an Environmental Perspective?
The healthiest system for the environment eliminates the use of plastic bottles and reduces energy usage. As such an on-tap, under-sink system is best. Additionally, Billi’s unique energy reclaim system boasts eco-credentials in that it recovers waste heat energy generated by chilling water.
Which Water Filter Removes the Most Chlorine?
Our premium 0.2 micron filter can reduce chemicals such as chlorine and other heavy metals.
What Kind of Water Filter Removes Bacteria?
Again, the smaller the micron filtration the better. Our premium micron 0.2 filter can remove parasitic cysts, giardia and cryptosporidium.

Carbon water filters can remove contaminants that are in your water supply and often improve the health and safety of drinking water. However, the efficacy of carbon water filters will depend on:
a) the kind of carbon filter (conventional or activated)
b) whether the filtration system has been certified
c) the regularity with which you replace your filters.
As experts in water filtration systems for over 25 years we’ve outlined below the key points you need to understand the question, ‘Are carbon water filters safe?’.
Is Carbon in Water Filters Dangerous?
There are two kinds of carbon water filters available:
- conventional carbon filters (made of granules) and;
- activated carbon filters (made of fibres).
Activated carbon filters are more effective because their multistage system increases the surface area available for filtration. Conventional carbon filters can be less effective because the resins which bond the granules reduce the filtration surface.
Is Carbon Filtered Water Safe?
Health certifications define the safety of each filter system. Billi’s premium activated carbon filters boast the Australian Standards WaterMark for product safety and consumer confidence to ensure you and your family have the highest level of drinking water available.
Are Carbon Water Filters Good and Are Carbon Water Filters Safe?
As noted above, activated carbon filters have more efficacy, and independent health certifications are central to the health of a system.
However, a carbon filter is only as good as its filter replacement and maintenance program. All filtered drinking water systems require these to ensure optimal quality and an ongoing high level of performance.
Learn more on our Why Billi page.

Reducing the chlorine in your tap water can be achieved through the installation of an under-bench instant water filtration system such as our award-winning Eco and Quadra models. By applying our 25+ years of expertise in designing and manufacturing water filtration systems, we can explain the answer to the question, ‘how do you filter chlorine from water?’.
How Do You Filter Chlorine from Tap Water?
We utilise activated carbon fibre filters that offer a graded density profile and feature superior contaminant reduction performance and capacity. These filters contrast significantly with conventional carbon filters which are often held together with a resin that essentially decreases the surface area and therefore the amount of and quality of filtration.
How Many Microns Should My Filter Be?
The micron numbers associated with filters relate to the size of particles a filter can block. So the larger the number, the fewer particles that are filtered. For example, a 5 micron filter will block larger particles than a 0.5 micron filter. Billi’s smallest filter is a 0.2 micron filter which, in addition to reducing chlorine, organic chemicals can also remove parasitic cysts giardia and cryptosporidium as well as reduce heavy metals.
Our Premium Filters page provides more detail on how you filter chlorine from water.
